Some of these designs took hold and went on to become the favorite swimwear that is still around and in demand even today. It was during the 20th century that things started to really change with regards to swimwear. This came about for two reasons. First of all, there was an increased interest in such things as recreational sports including swimming. The other thing that happened was the shocking French swimsuits that started influencing the world’s idea of what a swimsuit should be. The old fashioned, tortuous corset swimsuits were finally thrown out. In their place were the new, more erotic swimsuits that showed more of the bare body. What happened with the changing of swimsuits during the 20th century was ruthless exposing of the body because of smaller suits. Yet, in spite of everyone’s shock, many of these styles became the favorite swimwear of both men and women. The turn of the century introduced women to the first Jantzen swimsuits. These suits featured what was called the “rib stitch,” which was made from a rubber material that kept its shape whether it was dry or wet. It also didn’t soak up lots of water. In 1920, Australian polio victim named Annette Kellerman designed another suit that was both attractive functional. Ms. Kellerman had started swimming to make her legs stronger and created a black wool one piece suit that fit tightly and dispensed with the sleeves and skirts. Her suit did, however, retain the trousers that came two inches above the knees. Obviously, these styles weren’t destined to become favorite swimwear of anyone. The same cannot be said regarding the swimsuits that were introduced during the 1960s. This period of time became such a pivotal time during the 20th century that it was called The Sixties. It was in this decade where the body was the focus of everything that happened. It was also during this time when swimsuit designs went through a rather intense change. This was due to the introduction of Spandex, which is a synthetic polyurethane fiber perfect for swimwear. Spandex was the perfect material to use in creating swimsuits because it allowed for shapeliness, bold colors and a sexy silhouette. Now, things were on the way to creating favorite swimwear that everyone enjoyed. Lycra allowed the molding and shaping of swimsuits that offered a rounder and softer bosom as well as a style that reflected the natural body. On the heels of this look came the bikini. All the women wanted to wear one and all the men wanted to see the women wear them. The popular “Nude Look” appeared on the scene that had breasts exploding out of smaller tops. However, to make more modest women comfortable there was the “convertible” bikini. This was America’s contribution to the swimsuit evolution. This bikini had drawstrings or bows on either side of the bikini bottoms and in the center of the bra. These let the person wearing this bikini decide just how much of their bodies they wanted to show and they could adjust those drawstrings or bows as they saw fit. Those helped the bikini become favorite swimwear for most women. Another shocker in the form of a swimsuit was the “topless” suit designed by Rudi Gernreich. This special swimsuit was made from a black knit fabric that was nothing but a single pair of slender suspenders that came to the chest. Cole of California created a more acceptable version of this suit called the “Scandals.” This swimsuit was a black leotard with large sections of front, side and or middle parts cut out and replaced with wide mesh elastic netting. This started a “peek-a-boo” look that was made popular during this decade and is still widely loved today. It’s easy to see that the fishnet look was one of the more well-known favorite swimwear designs for women. It’s safe to say that the bikini and many versions of it is still one of the staples in the summer wardrobe of many women. Of course, in order to successfully wear a bikini of any style, women need to be in reasonably decent shape. Otherwise, the sought after results of wearing the bikini will be lost because excessively overweight women simply do not look enticing in bikinis. When it comes to the evolution of swimwear, men’s suits can certainly not be left out. The men’s swimsuit originated as a garment that was very similar to the undergarments worn by men. This caused it to endure an uphill fight to become separated from the actual underwear garments and be accepted as a swimsuit on its own. Fortunately, today’s swimwear for men has become something that all men must have for their water recreational activities. It’s not only acceptable for men to wear these, but it’s expected that they will have more than one to participate in summer and swimming activities. Men are expected to own favorite swimwear that reflects their personal tastes, preferences, and hobbies. The materials used to create mens swimsuits range from polka dots to wild animal prints to bright red hearts to celebrate Valentine’s Day. In fact, many women will give some of those swimsuits with hearts on them to their husbands or boyfriends, so you KNOW they have to wear them at least once. For many years, mens swimsuits have been limited to the style of basic boxers or briefs. However, cultural influences have entered the picture in recent years to make mens swimsuits more interesting than they were before. Since swimming has become a very popular sport as well as just a recreational activity, there was a need for the mens swimsuit to evolve in order to keep up with current styles in other areas of mens clothing. Speedo introduced its skin tight Lycra swimsuits for men, and favorite swimwear has included very brief mens bikinis influenced by the suits of competitive swimmers.
